The R line up for Volkswagen is made up of the Golf R in North America and the Scirocco R in Europe. However, it has been known for a while that there was an R version of the Beetle planned and that it would be being sent to the US. At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show there was even a production ready concept.
It has been a long time in coming though as only recently have shots been seen of it. The most recent were taken in Germany and the body kit can be seen. This gives the car a sportier look with changes to rear and front fascias. It also has side skirts and dual exhausts. The spoiler is not as subtle and it has five spoke wheels, unique to the R branding.
The photographer believes that the look will be changed to an even sportier sheetmetal before it comes on the market – which will give it the more aggressive look of the car shown in Frankfurt. It may also get larger front air intakes and rear spoiler with vertical vents on the back bumper. The concept did have polished wheels but it is not certain whether the production model will have these as the R rang does not traditionally have these. Whether it will get the quad tipped exhausts and vented hood also remain a mystery at the moment.
It does have sporty brakes with red calipers and these make it look great. Under the bonnet there is a 2.0 litre engine which is expected to be capable or 296 horsepower, the same as that available with the next Golf R. The photographer also reported that there was a deep note sound from the exhaust.
It is expected that the car will be available to buy at the end of 2014 and possible debuted at Paris or Geneva.
