This is the ninth version of Mercedes’ S-class full-size sedan that is a luxury model. This goes all the way back to the 1956 220S. That is a long time going back for just one model. The upcoming S-class ill have more of a presence out there, but it will still be more aerodynamic to go faster. It will have two wheelbases. There are going to be stretched out versions and armored versions as well. A two-dour couple will come out with the CL moniker as well, and there might also be a four-door convertible that will be like the 2007 Ocean Drive idea. AMG models are definitely going to come out.
This is important because the S-Class is the ultimate sedan by Daimler, and it has a title that goes back tons of generations. It will replace the badly thoughout out and canceled Maybach. There are some people that say it will represent the height of all sedans. They could even bring back the Pullman name for the ultra high-end models of the S-class. These will replace the Maybach line-up coming out. At the very least, it is one of the important benchmark. Making sure the car comes out right is very important to the image of brand.
What about the platform? The upcoming S-class is called internally the W222, and it will sit on a rear-wheel-drive-based platform that will have all-wheel drive. It will have an electronic architecture that can be upgraded, and there are a ton of new telematics and assistance systems that can be installed in it. The architecture could include semi-autonomous driving, and the new Active Body Control chassis could look at the road ahead with a camera-based look and make sure the suspension is right for the just the right amount of comfort and stability coming up.
What about the powertrains? There will be a 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel, a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel, and there will be two hybrid models too. Hybridization could start to be applied to other models as well. There is the standard V-6, V-8, and V-12 gas-powered engines. Plus, there will be a pair of turbos, and the second one should get up to 650 horsepower. The transmission will be a basic seven-speed automatic system.
What about the competition? The competition includes the Audi A8, BMW 7, and Jaguar XJ.
What could go wrong? The prototypes look pretty plain. There are rumors that the next S-class will take a big leap forward in terms of design, but those are not seen in the test projects yet. There is the design chief Gorden Wagener says that the S-class is ultra-important to get right on the exterior. The interior should continue to be as opulent as ever.
What is the estimated arrival and cost? It should probably come out in 2013 or 2013, and the base price should be around $100K and get even higher up from there probably.
