The car photographed is the Buick Chevy Cruze’s next generation vehicle a Verano compact sedan. It was pictured in Europe and has German licence plates. The prototype seems to be quite far along in its development and so is likely to be the next one available on the market. The Chinese have already had one debut on the market there and it is thought that this may be destined for that market and that there will be a different design for the US market.
This car has a flatter front and back windscreen which is longer, making it more aerodynamic. It has shorter boot lids as well as stretched C-pillars making it fit in well with the recent trend in the industry. There is more of a slope to the front end and the headlamps and grille are set low down. The quarter panels on the back and doors look hunched in the way that Buick’s traditionally do. The back of the car looks a bit duck tailed and has exhaust finishers that are dual trapezoidal and inside a dark low bumper graphic.
No ventiports can be seen, but it is thought that they will be on part of the bonnet eventually. The car also has a moon roof with dual panes which could indicate that this will be offered on the Cruze soon. The model may not be as appealing to many as the current US version of the car.
The car is a downsized version and this could make it much more appealing to buyers who are very much looking to reduce the fuel costs of their vehicles. It is expected that the car will be a sure fire hit in China but the company are looking to make some impact in the US seeing off their competition from Audi and Lexus.
The car will be built on GM’s global Delta II platform and it is expected that some of the current engine choices might carry over. At the moment the choice is between a 2.4 litre which has 180hp and a turbocharge 2.0 litre which has 250hp. It is expected that there will be the introduction of the new small architecture engine that GM have introduced. This could mean replacing the base engine with a 1.4 litre turbo or perhaps a 1.6 turbo. It may also have a 2.0 litre turbo-diesel option so that it can compete with the likes of Audi and BMW. There may also be a GS variant and this could have a six speed manual or six speed automatic option although it is likely that the more standard models will only come in automatic perhaps with the option of a seven speed dual clutch.
The car will see competition from the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz CLA-class as well as the Acura ILX. It is thought the it will be the middle of 2015 when the car arrives in China and it will be up to a year before it gets to the US. Therefore the Chinese car may appear at the Shanghai Auto Show next year and it could be LA or Detroit in late 2015 or early 2016 when it appears in the USA. Prices will have a starting mark of around $30k.
