The 2015 Alfa Romeo Spider roadster has been photographed while tests in Michigan by Chrysler engineers. It is disguised under a Mazda MX5 Miata skin but with references to a ‘new Spider’ from Alfa Romeo it looks like this is what this is. The name may be changing though as in Italy Duetto seems to under consideration.
It is exciting news that this car is making a return to the US. With its iconic body style and the fact that it has not been seen in the US for 20 years many people are very interested indeed.
The car will be more lightweight with rear wheel drive and developed mainly by Mazda. There will be no sharing of sheet metal though although it seems that there will be shared components but rumours have that amount anywhere form 40 – 80% so nothing too firm on that. It is expected that the suspension will be aluminium though. The car seen was being tested by Chrysler who own the Alfa company and so it seems that they will be having some say in the final details of the vehicle.
There are rumours about two possible engines for the car at the moment, but it is expected that there will only be one by the time the production model makes an appearance. The first is a 1.4 litre turbocharged engine with four cylinders which will be capable of around 170 horsepower and this could be related to the Fiat 500 Abarth power plant and other Fiat and Chrysler cars, As an alternative they may be go for the 4C engine which is 240 hp and 1750 cc. It is expected that it will be a dual clutch automatic, although many potential buyers may be hoping for a manual.
The car will be in direct competition with the Mercedes Benz SLK-class, BMW Z4, Audi TT and Mazda MX-5 Miata. It is expected that it will debut next year and come out as a 2015 model. However Alfa Romeo tend to delay things a bit so it could be a year later than that. Price wise it could be that they will price around $35,000 in between the cost of the Miata and other dearer cars on the market but it is anyone’s guess at the moment.
