The spy pics of the BMW 2 series coupe may look good, but when you realise it is the high performance M235i that is being tested, they are even more exciting.
The clues to this are a selection of components form the M135i hot hatch. These include the 18 inch dual spoke wheels which are exclusive to the M135i which cover brake calipers that are four pot on the front and two pot on the rear. They are painted blue which is the sign that they are M performance which are fitted as an option on the 1 series but standard on the M135i.
There is a further clue in the black mirror housings as well as the deeper shape of the front bumper, which can just about be seen under the camouflage. There are twin tailpipes in the rear bumper which is a train of the M performance BMW cars. This is not the M2 of course, which will come later but a half way model between the |M division and normal mode of car.
The car will have the straight six turbocharged engine form the M135i with six or eight speed automatic gearbox. The UK versions will only have rear drive but the left hand drive models will have xDrive powertrains.
The cabin is very similar form the 1 series hatchback but with one interesting difference. It has a M sport design steering wheel, a design that all the coupes will soon be having. It is a sportier design with slimmer and spoked helms.
It is likely that the 2-series will launched late this year and there will be a doft top arriving in the summer of 2014. There is also a possibility that there could be a 2 –series Gran Coupe which will rival the Mercedes CLA which is their new four door compact model.
