The new BMW I8 hybrid is a supercar that is really attracing some attention. Spy photographers were lucky enough to capture some photographs of it during a recent round of evaluation. This time, however, there is a full-blown video that is almost 5 minutes in length, and there are some great high-resolution static images too.
BMW unveiled the new model at the Frankfurt Motor Show at the same time they unveiled the i8 Concept. This is the model that will sit atop the pinnacle of the company’s «i» sub-brand that will go above the i3, and they were both seen at the same auto show.
The concept was a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine joined to an electric motor that created a combined output of 353 PS (260 kW/ 349 hp) and 550 Nm (406 Nm) of pure raw torque. Recent rumors have positioned the Bavarian company as looking to exchange the powertrain with a turbo-charged four-cylinder engine, possibly as a way to get a little bit extra horsepower.
As far as performance goes, we should expect to see the i8 go from 0-100kph releatively quickly, in around 4.8 seonds. The price should be around $235,000, and this will put it in direct competition with the Mercededs SLS AMG E-Cell.
