The new Discovery Sport model is being tested by Land Rover. This will be the vehicle that will replace the Freelander and is due on the market in 2015. It was seen in testing on a public road in Gaydon, Warwickshire near to the Jaguar Land Rover technology base there. It did have some disguise, but it was still possible to see some of the details of the car.
The car has a diesel four cylinder engine, 2.2 litre and this is likely to be one of the main engines for this car. However, there is already a new range of engines planned for mid 2015 which will be called Ingenium and so these are likely to be an option later.
The car will have an option of front wheel and four wheel drive and will be based on the architecture that the Range Rover Evoque has.
The spy photos reveal some interesting information. It can be seen that the front of the car will look similar to the Evoque and Sport that have been recently released, which lend features to this car. The car also has slim head lights and the grilles and air vents are similar to those on the 2014 Discovery Vision concept car.
The C-pillar is also unusual in that it has a rearward angle which is different to the New York show car which was more of a switchback style. According to the photographers there is black gloss cladding on the glasshouse which make it look like a floating roof with them being piano black in the same way as the mini. In the pictures all you can see is white tape on them though.
The car might be the same size as the Freelander but it will be more flexible with the option of five or seven seats. It has been said by Phil Poplam, the Land Rover Marketing Chief that the car is like a compact version of the Discovery but will be smaller than the Vision concept car.
It is interesting that Land Rover has decided to no longer go with the Freelander name. They started this a while ago when they put forward a Discovery Vision in 2014 at the New York motor show. The Discovery is a very successful model for the company and so by changing the name to this it will help customers to feel more positive about the model. It has been celebrating 25 years of the Discovery this year as it is so popular. It has also promised that there will be a big family of models and they are hoping to have the same relationship between Discovery and Discovery sport as they do between Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.
Lnd Rover sales have been really good in the last few years and it has been very much thanks to the Range Rober Evoque which has increased in sales from none to 113,000 in a year which is pretty good going. In fact 70% of Land Rover sales are Range Rovers and it is hoped that starting with this new model, the Land Rover will be able to start to take a bigger share of the sales too.
