The latest pictures of the Mercedes GLA show the inside of the vehicle for the first time. The crossover will be launched later this year and will compete with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3
It is based on the A-class hatchback, in that it has the same engines, gearboxes and underpinnings. The cabin also looks identical, if the photos are anything to go by.
There are some changes to it though; it is not just a larger version of the A-class, as its looks may imply. It has new body panels and looks rather more like a toned down version of the concept GLA that was seen in April this year. It is expected that the 20inch rims and the round fog lights will be replaced but the styling of the door skin and the rear lights are expected to remain. The long wheelbase and overhang are the same as the concept model. It will also have more ground clearance than the rival cars on the market.
This may imply that it will be able to go off road, but the Range Rover Evoque will probably continue to be the car in this market that will be able to do this the best. However, the Mercedes will have an all-wheel drive option as is seem on the CLA 45 AMG and A45 AMG.
The car is a downsized 4×4 and will have a power take off unit which will send power to the rear wheels and that will go to a 7G automatic transmission unit. This reduces friction by saving space and is also more efficient and reduced the weight as well.
There will also be a GLA ANG version which will be able to compete directly with the Audi RS Q3. It will use the 2.0 litre four cylinder, turbo charged engine that is in the A-class and CLA that will provide 355bhp and 332 lb/ft of torque. It is expected that the car will cost in the region of £45,000 with entry level GLAs costing £25,000.
