Mercedes is working hard on a new model to compete with the next Porsche 911, Jaguar F-type R Coupe and Audi R8. It’s new model of the GT AMG has been seen in testing in Scandinavia in the cold.
Last time the cat was spotted it was very heavily disguised when testing near the Nurburgring. It was heavily camouflaged but now it has less of a thick covering and so its shape can be more clearly seem. It certainly looks sleek and has a pert tail with pop up aerofoil. The front end has some interesting styling by the looks of it and it has a stance rather like a black cab.
Insiders at Mercedes have said that the car will look stunning and it looks like they might be right, but considering the competition that it has, it will really need to look very special indeed.
It is not actually a replacement for the SLS ANG supercar despite the fact that this gullwinged doored £170k flagship model will no longer be produced by the end of 2014. Mercedes has even said that they will not be replacing it with anything so they will no longer be able to compete with the Lamborghini Huracan, McLaren 12C and Ferrari 458 Speciale.
This means that the GT AMG will be a cheaper and lighter model. It is expected to start at a price of £85,000 and so will slot right in to the market with the Jaguar F0type Coupes and Porsche 911 Carrera S. It is expected that a lot of the SLS template will be used, it looks like the GT AMG will have a long nose, front engine, dual clutch gearbox at rear of the car and rear wheel drive.
The V8 engine will not be the same 6.2 litre naturally aspirated thunderstorm that drives the SLS models but it will have a downsized Mercedes twin turbocharge 4.0 Litre V8 engine which will be capable of 485bhp in the basic GT AMG car.
The GT AMG will eventually have three models in the range. There will not only be a basic model but also an ‘S’ version which will be able to do 505 bhp. The in 2017 there will be a Black Series model which will be lighter and tuned so that it can compete with the Lamborghinin Huracan Superleggera. This will cost six figures.
This car will have carbon fibre aero wings to reduce the weight which are similar to those on the Mercedes SLS ANG Black Series. The engines will be capable of 585bhp which is even better than the Porsche 911 Turbo S is capable of. This will mean that the GT AMG will be able to be considered to be a supercar again.
The SLS AMG is very heavy and the GT AMG will be 300kg lighter than it. They will use a version of the SLS frame which is aluminium and by getting rid of the vertical doors for conventional ones, they will shed even more weight. There will therefore be less theatre in the car but it will much more fuel efficient and this is likely to be what drivers of a 2+2 seater car are looking for these days.
The GT AMG version will be up for sale in 2015 but this year there will be a concept car appearing. It does not look like there will be a soft top version though because the company do not want to infringe on their sales of the SL65 and SL63 AMG so there will be no GT AMG Roadster.
