Reducing fuel consumption by a liter is impossible only due to one method. However, the combination of all methods that provide 5 to 15% savings allows you to achieve a good result.
The problem is that many do not know how to improve gas mileage, believing that the engine, requiring diagnosis and debugging, is responsible for the large fuel consumption. Typically, in such cases, the fuel supply is disrupted, and the motor loses power. The on-board computer solves this problem by increasing the volume of injected fuel. But, in most cases, even a worn engine can reduce fuel consumption with a correct approach. Consider the main ways to improve mileage slightly.
1. Change your driving style
The most significant impact on fuel consumption has an uneconomical driving style. According to a study by Finnish scientists, with an irrational driving style, fuel overruns reach 300 liters per year.
The less frequently you accelerate and brake, the lower the fuel consumption. It is best to move smoothly and maintain a constant speed. Do not press sharply on the gas pedal – fuel consumption will increase tenfold. Less brake before traffic lights – it is better to roll up to them on the gear.
If you have a manual transmission, change gears in time, and quickly switch to higher. Quiet driving 20-40 m/h on fourth or fifth gear will provide the lowest fuel consumption. On an automatic transmission, fuel consumption will be more significant – to save, press the gas pedal as smoothly as possible.
2. Monitor the technical condition of the car
Saving on car maintenance, you’ll spend a lot on gasoline. It is better to take care of the condition of the car, and not only ensure safety on the road, but also reduce monthly fuel costs.
Change the spark plugs in time, and check whether there is residue on them. Do not skimp on the adjustment of the wheel alignment – this will reduce the overspend by 60 liters per year.
Keep the air and fuel filters clean. Also, do not forget about the tire pressure: reducing the pressure by 0.5 atmospheres will increase fuel consumption to 6 extra liters per year.
3. Choose the right engine oil
Choose the right engine oil for your car and give preference to synthetic and semi-synthetic formulations with low viscosity — they will reduce friction between moving parts of the engine and can reduce fuel consumption up to 80 liters per year.
Many people do not understand how to reduce fuel consumption by pouring high-quality synthetic oil into the engine. But we should remember the primary purpose of the lubricant. It is to reduce the coefficient of friction between paired parts. The easier it is to move the rotating parts of the motor and gearbox, the less energy is required and, as a consequence, within 7-8% reduced fuel consumption.
4. Monitor electrical system and sensors
A worn-out battery holds a charge worse and charges more slowly. When electronics “sees” too low charge level, it sends more fuel to the engine to rotate the generator faster.
It is necessary to take into account that the battery has a certain speed of charge. If several power-consuming devices are connected to the system (headlights, a/c, music system, heated seats, etc.), the generator will work harder even with a completely new battery.
5. Fall in behind the truck
This method of saving fuel when driving on the highway is very effective.
The idea is that you are moving along the road behind a large vehicle at a distance of 2-5 meters. Thus, your car meets almost no air resistance, and you save a lot of fuel. Also, you adjust to the smooth speed of the truck, moving without acceleration and braking.
The method, however, is suitable only for experienced drivers, as the truck limits the view of the road. The truck can also brake sharply, and if you move between trucks, there is a risk when overtaking by other cars that they may not notice you. Therefore, saving fuel in this way, be extremely careful.
6. Close the windows
Open windows operate on the principle of a parachute – at high speeds, they significantly affect the aerodynamics. To overcome the resistance of the air requires more energy; therefore, more fuel is consumed. When driving at high speed, it is better to turn on the air conditioner — fuel consumption will be lower.
7. Get rid of all the excess
The heavier the car, the more fuel is consumed for its movement. You can reduce the weight of the vehicle at the expense of cargo: pull out of the cabin and trunk all the excess and save on fuel. It is also useful to remove the trunk from the roof — it not only increases the weight of the car but also worsens the aerodynamics.
Now, knowing how to improve your gas mileage, you can experiment by choosing the most effective and optimal methods. It is impossible to use all of them at the same time, as many factors depend on the driver and the design features of the car. But even using several methods of economy, it is possible to achieve a slight reduction in fuel consumption.
