Renault is working on a new bigger model that according to rumors will replace both the Laguna and the Vel Satis at the same time. That means that Renault will do the same trick as Peugeot is doing replacing both the 407 and 607 with the new 508.
The base for this new Renault, that probably will get the name Safrane, is the Samsung SM5 and just like the SM5 it will also be built in Korea. The Samsung SM5 is on the other hand based on the Renault Laguna platform. This will not be the first Renault model being built in Korea, remember the Koleos is also built there. If the Safrane will get the same engines as the SM5, 2.0 liter petrol with automatic gearbox is still unknown but thanks to the recent Renault-Mercedes deal we could find some of the new Mercedes four and six-cylinder, Euro6-compatible diesel engines in the Safrane.
It’s also well known that Carlos Ghosn, chairman for Renault-Nissan, wants Renault to expand into the North American market in the long term. We guess Mercedes production bases and dealer network in the US must look attractive for that reason. Maybe the new Safrane will be one of the first Renault models in the US in the future.
