The BMW X4 has been photographed free of any camouflage while on a roof in Southern USA. The X4 concept was previewed in April at the Shanghai Auto Show and is based on the second generation X3. They have done the same as they did with the X6 and based a four door SUV on the X5 and they look similar for this. The X4 is more stylish than the X6 with some sculpting on the side of the body that looks like the X3. This look will also be taken on by the X6 when it debuts in half a year so there will be continuity across all of the models.
The X4 will have high seats, assistance systems, electronic gadgets and a premium interior. There will be less space than inside the X3 but it will still be practical because of all the gear it has and therefore should still appeal.
BMW invented the notion of a SUV, Coupe crossover and other car manufacturers are copying them. They want to assert their position and so put another option out there. There will be competition from Mercedes-Benz and Audi in the future but with them being novices and BMW already having the X4 and X6 well established they will be in a good position. They will need to be making good money too as they have invested a lot in to electric and they will want to recap some of that.
The car will share its platform with the X3. It will be lower and wider and possible shorter as well. It supports all and rear wheel drive and can offer a hybrid option although this is unlikely to appear very quickly.
In the US market there will be two options for engines. There will be a 240hp 28i which is a 2.0 litre four cylinder and the 35i which is a 3.0 litre inline six which is capable of 300hp. Both will be turbocharged and with an eight speed automatic gearbox. It is possible that the 28i may have sDrive rear wheel drive as well as xDrive all wheel drive and there may be a six speed manual gearbox as well. The 35i will only be available in all wheel drive. It is even possible that there could be an X4 M which is in the 2015 M3 and M4 and has a six cylinder powertrain which can do 400+ hp.
The car will be competing with the BMW X3, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, Porsche Macan and Audi Q5. It is expected that it will be the spring when the car will be revealed and it will go on sale at the beginning of the summer with pricing starting upwards of $45,000.
