The new S-class range is being finished by Mercedes now and it will have 5 models, one of which will be its replacement for the CL, which is what we will focus on here. It is being rebadged as the S-class coupe and will be revealed in 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show, This two door car will be in the same market sector as the Bentley Continental GT.
There will be a regular saloon car and a version with a longer wheelbase released in 2013. There will also be a four seat version with a drop top. This is inspired by the Ocean Drive concept which was a four door car version in 2007. They are hoping the new car will be as iconic as the 280SE 3.5 which was discontinued back in the 1970’s.
It is possible that there will be a four door coupe as well, although this has not been confirmed by Mercedes. If they did produce one, it would be likely to have the S-class saloon underpinnings.
There will be a consistent style among all of the S-class vehicles although they will vary in wheelbase length and rear doors.
The sporty S-classes are likely to have anything from a V8 to V12 engine. The S500 will have a 4.8 litre V8 which will have 435bhp. The S600 will have a 6.0 litre V12 and that will give 544bhp. This extra capacity should help the Mercedes take over the Bentley with regards to power.
The sportier AMG S63 and S65 will be slightly different. They will have a 5.5. litre V8 544bhp and a V12 giving 630bhp. The AMG will also have a new look with a lower air intake as well as wheel arches that protrude more. There will be an interesting rear diffuser that is DTM inspired and it will have four tail pipes made of chrome. It is expected that the starting price will be around £95,000.
