The new Audi Q5 is due to arrive on the market in 2016 and it will be built in Mexico at San Jose Chiapa. This is possibly due to the fact that the wages are cheaper in Mexico than in Ingolstadt where the previous model was built and it will create 20,000 new jobs which will be a big boost to the local economy there. However, there have been people who have criticised the decision saying that the factory is so far away that quality control may not be that easy.
There are 150,000 units a year due to be built as the model has sold well world-wide. There is also likely to be the addition of the Q6 to the workload in the factory the following year which is a more expensive model. This means that the Q5 continues as a family orientated SUV and the Q6 is a sportier model which will make up part of the crossover market.
The Q5 has been considered by some to be the best looking crossover on sale at the moment, but the new model will be a redesign and so it could look quite different. There are some details known about it already so you can decide whether you think that it will be as widely admired as the current model.
This new model has been set up to compete with the Range Rover Evoque, Porsche Macan, BMWX3 and Mercedes GLK. It will be using the MLBevo Platform which is more advanced than what is used on the current model. This should make the model lighter, more efficient and easier to handle. There are also plans to use both front and four wheel drive powertrains.
It is expected that the Q5 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI will be the best selling models which can do 245 bhp with 273 lb/ft torque and 190 bhp with 295 lb/ft torque respectively. There will also be a Q5 3.0 V6 TDI which is capable of 272 bhp and 443 lb/ft torque and it is expected that there will be other models to follow as well. This speculation is largely due to the fact that Audi have a triple turbo 3.0 V6 TDI being designed which is capable of 354 bhp and 516 lb/ft torque. The third charger is an electric device which will give better torque from the start.
The 340bhp SQ5 will be able to compete with the Macan S which is capable of the same power. However the Q5 RS can do 450bhp which will be a lot more powerful than the Macan Turbo which can do 400bhp. They will both be eight speed automatic engines.
It is expected that there will be a Q5 e-tron Quattro ultra which will give the best mpg as it is a plug in hybrid. It will have a combination of a 2.0 litre four engine with an electric motor. The compned 252 bhp and 109 bhp is the same as the combination planned for the next BMW X3. It is expected that choosing this option will see an uplift in price of about £3000.
The new Q5 will also be full of exciting technical additions. There will be many options available to choose form for the customer that wants and can afford them. There will be LED or Laser matrix headlights and 20 or 21 inch wheels as well as a matt paint job and s-line livery which will be exclusive. Inside the car there will be an innovative infotainment system that has been put together with the help of Google, a flexible instrument binnacle which is like the one in the TT and a direct access Drive Select using a steering wheel button.
